Sri Lanka is one of the best-value long-haul trips you can take from Australia. Going by the most recent published figures, a budget traveller spends about A$30 a day, a mid-range traveller about A$83 a day, and a luxury traveller about A$250 a day. That is roughly A$214, A$586 and A$1,745 for a week.
This guide pulls together current prices from two well-documented 2026 sources so you can plan a realistic daily budget, see where the money actually goes, and know where you can save.

For a real-world check, the Never Ending Footsteps writer averaged US$74 a day over two weeks, made up of:
- Accommodation: US$44 a day for two people (US$22 each)
- Transport: US$7 a day
- Food: US$21 a day
- Activities and entry fees: US$24 a day
That is a comfortable mid-range trip with guesthouses, a couple of safaris and plenty of cafe meals, which lines up well with the A$83 mid-range average above.
How much is A$1 in Sri Lankan rupees?
The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) is the local currency. When The Currency Shop page was checked on 6 October 2026, its live rate showed 1 AUD = about 230 LKR. The rate changes daily, so check it again before you go. A card that converts at the mid-market rate with low fees, rather than an airport exchange counter, is usually the cheapest way to pay and withdraw cash.

Family-run guesthouses and homestays are the sweet spot. Never Ending Footsteps paid about US$30 a night for these, and its real stays ranged from US$19 a night for an Airbnb room in Kandy to US$26 in Sigiriya, US$32 in Tangalle, US$36 in Ella and US$77 to US$85 for nicer places in Mirissa and Galle Fort. Boutique hotels and private villas typically run US$75 to US$125 a night.
Money-saving tips:
- Breakfast is included at most guesthouses, which takes a meal out of your daily food bill.
- Quieter towns cost less. Tangalle was noticeably cheaper than Mirissa for a similar standard.
- Two people sharing a double room roughly halves the per-person cost, which is how the US$22 per person figure above was reached.
Food and drink costs

Individual meal prices reported by Never Ending Footsteps (USD):
- Local breakfast of hoppers with tea or coffee: US$4
- Western-style avocado toast and coffee: US$8
- Chicken kottu roti: US$3.50
- Devilled fish and rice: US$5
- Grilled fish or calamari with chips: US$7 to US$10
- Seafood platter to share: US$16 to US$25
- Burger: US$5 to US$7; pizza: US$11
- Large bottle of water: US$0.50
Eating at local rice-and-curry and kottu shops, you can get by on about US$10 a day for food. Mixing one local meal with one Western-style meal came to about US$20 a day.
How much is a beer in Sri Lanka in Australian dollars?
About A$4 for a bottle of beer, according to Numbeo figures quoted by The Currency Shop (collected September 2024). Never Ending Footsteps paid US$3.25 for a large bottle of local beer in 2026. A bottle of wine averages about A$19, a cappuccino about A$3, and a 1.5 litre bottle of water about A$1.
Transport costs
Getting around Sri Lanka is cheap if you use buses and trains and only take tuk-tuks for short hops.
- Local buses: around US$0.20 for a short city ride and US$3 to US$4 for a journey of several hours.
- Trains: US$5 to US$20 for a seat when booked online, depending on the train and class. First class has air-conditioning and numbered seats, second class has cushioned seats and open windows, and third class has benches.
- Tuk-tuks: about US$0.35 per kilometre for short trips, with a lower rate on longer rides, or about US$25 to hire a driver for the day. Agree the fare first, or ask your guesthouse what a fair price is.
- Ride-hailing: the PickMe app shows the fare up front for taxis and tuk-tuks in cities like Colombo and Kandy, so there is no haggling. In small towns you will usually hail one on the street.
The Kandy to Ella train
The hill-country train between Kandy and Ella is the trip most travellers want to do, and seats sell out every day. Book well ahead, especially if you want reserved first or second class. The journey is scheduled for about seven hours but can take up to ten. Travelling in the less popular direction can make tickets easier to get.
Activities and entrance fees
Sightseeing is the cost that catches people out, because headline sites charge foreigners much more than locals. Prices paid in 2026 according to Never Ending Footsteps (USD):
| Activity | Price |
|---|---|
| Sigiriya Rock | US$30 to US$35 |
| Pidurangala Rock (view of Sigiriya) | US$3 |
| Dambulla Cave Temples | US$5 |
| Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy | US$6.50 |
| Cooking class, Kandy | US$28 |
| Surf lesson | US$12 to US$20 per hour |
| Scuba diving (two dives) | US$75 |
| Whale watching, Mirissa | US$71 |
| Private safari, Udawalawe National Park | US$85 |
| Half-day safari, Yala National Park | US$153 |
The Currency Shop puts the average daily spend on attractions and entertainment at about 2,796 LKR (about A$12).
Biggest saving: climb Pidurangala Rock instead of Sigiriya. You get the classic view of Sigiriya from the top for about a tenth of the price. If you want a safari, Udawalawe is usually the cheaper and less crowded choice compared with Yala.
Is Sri Lanka as cheap as Bali?
They are in the same ballpark for budget travellers. Day-to-day costs for guesthouses, local food and buses are low in both. Where Sri Lanka can cost more is sightseeing, because big sites such as Sigiriya and the national-park safaris charge foreigners in US dollars. If you mostly want beaches and cafes, the two are similar. If you plan to tick off the Cultural Triangle and a safari, budget extra for Sri Lanka. See our cheapest trip to Bali guide to compare.
How expensive is Sri Lanka for tourists?
Not very, as long as you travel like a local for most of the day. A realistic plan for an Australian traveller:
- Shoestring (about A$30 a day): dorms or simple homestays, local rice and curry, buses and third-class trains, mostly free sights and cheap climbs like Pidurangala.
- Comfortable (about A$80 a day): private rooms in good guesthouses, a mix of local and cafe meals, reserved train seats and a few tuk-tuk days, plus one or two paid sites.
- Treat yourself (A$250 a day and up): boutique hotels or villas, private drivers, safaris and diving.
A two-week mid-range trip at around A$83 a day comes to roughly A$1,160 per person on the ground, before flights. Check our cheap flights guide and cheapest time to fly to keep the airfare down.
Other costs to budget for
- Entry requirements: check what you need before you book on the official Sri Lanka ETA website. Rules and fees can change, so rely on the official site rather than older blog posts.
- Mobile data: an eSIM bought before you land saves hunting for a SIM shop at the airport.
- Travel insurance: worth it for scooter, safari and diving trips.
- Tipping: small tips for drivers, guides and guesthouse staff are appreciated.
